New Fish Discovered on Little Corn Island Barrier Reef During Scuba Diving Trip
Little Corn Island is a great place to Scuba Dive!
POSSIBLE NEW “UNDESCRIBED” FISH DISCOVERED ON LITTLE CORN ISLAND BARRIER REEF
Be you a beginner or expert the cost of diving or learning to dive is incredibly LOW on Little Corn Island. The island is sheltered by an extensive reef system that protects both the island and many different types of flora and fauna. The reef is a healthy cornucopia of fish and mammals both big and small, common and rare. Other added bonuses are the minimal currents and bathtub water temperatures.
REEF.org
Reef Environmental Education Foundation* (REEF) is an international marine conservation organization that implements hands-on programs to involve local communities in conservation-focused activities brought a whole team of “citizen scientists” to Little Corn Island in the August of 2019.
The team took advantage of the comfortable cabins and grounds of Little Corn Island Beach and Bungalow and enjoyed numerous meals and tasty libations at the Turned Turtle Restaurant. Based on feedback we are happy to say, everyone had an enjoyable time.
The Good news
But there is even better news. Conservation Coordinator Ellie Place (REEF) reported their experience below.
“At the end of the August, ten REEF citizen scientists traveled to Little Corn Island, a tiny, remote stretch of land in the Caribbean, located about 75 miles northeast of mainland Nicaragua. This goal of this Field Survey Trip was to collect and report data about the fish populations in this infrequently dived and visited area. There is very little data available about the marine life inhabiting Little Corn Island, and our volunteer divers were excited to find many interesting species, color variations and range extensions in the area.”
“One particularly exciting find was the Moth Blenny (Ekemblemaria nigra), which had previously only been reported from the Caribbean coast of Central and South America. Volunteers also photographed a potentially undescribed Goby, likely a member of the Elacatinus genus. This species is similar to the Yellowprow Goby (Elacatinus xanthiprora), with minor differences in appearance and behavior that the trained citizen scientists were able to recognize as a result of their participation with REEF’s Volunteer Fish Survey Project. The group was also delighted to find multiple Golden Hamlets (Hypoplectrus gummigutta) on several of their dives!”

Little Corn But Big Coral Sand Beach!
We have heard it all before, “Sure it’s a nice beach on a tropical Caribbean island, but it is not as big as Miami Beach!”. Well, it will never be as wide as Miami Beach (not as crowded either) but we are working on making our own Coral Sand beach at Little Corn Beach and Bungalow the best darn beach it can be!
Little Corn Island Beach and Bungalow Beachfront Boutique hotel has recently installed a brand new jetty! Sixty (60) cubic meters of rock, 20 cages and 3 months later (it is island time) the job was finished.
Just 10 days have elapsed since the jetty was installed and already our special little (corn) beach is responding by getting . . . bigger! The Little Corn Beach and Bungalow beach now has 15 inches deeper sand and about 5 more yards of beach. We expect even better results with each passing day.
Come down to Little Corn and check it out for yourself!
